Background
In 1971, Bangladesh appeared on the world map as an independent sovereign state. Suhrawardy Udyan located in the heart of Dhaka city has a continuous link with the history of development of Bangladesh. On March 7, 1971, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the leader of the Bengali nation, said in a speech given here, "This time's struggle is our liberation struggle, this time's struggle is the struggle for freedom." It was at Suhrawardy Udyan that his success culminated in the surrender of the Pakistani army to the coalition forces. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave his first speech in newly independent Bangladesh here on January 10, 1972 after being released from Pakistan's Mianwali Jail. It was here that Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi gave a speech in 1972.
To commemorate these historical events, the government plans to build a memorial in Suhrawardy Udyan. Freedom Pillar is one of the aspects of this combination.
